Moka Only – She ran away to Mexico to join the circus [2001]
This is a previously unreleased collection of tracks recorded in October 2001. Some have been mixed from ADAT system with the exception of tracks 1,3,7,8,10 and 14, which are from Cassette tapes due to the original ADAT masters missing.
There was a lot going on during the Fall of 2001, despite tragic world events, I was feeling more ambitious than ever, which as I reflect, was in part due to the way the music industry was in the early 2000s. It seemed like almost every serious musician I knew was experiencing success, and the optimism was palpable. I myself was just on the brink of some very big rap happenings. There were four or five projects I was working on during October of that year and only one was released in 2016, that being Nowfolk – The Winter.
‘She ran away to Mexico to join the circus ‘didn’t have a title back then. It was just an assortment of tracks that I felt accurately summed up that month. They are laid out here in the same chronological order as they were recorded. The final track, ‘If You Want It’, is included as a bonus track, as it was recorded a couple of months later. It seemed at home here, stylistically and thematically. Not to toot my own horn, but I truly believe I was soaring high during that period, in terms of my own musical progression and lyrics. Damn, what a time. I hope you enjoy what we have presented here, and even more so, I wish that all my peoples from back then get a chance to soak this up, and perhaps relive some memories and vibes from that grand era.
Big thanks to ST MIC who did the mastering and was able to EQ and level the old and dusty cassette tape songs, and have them work in between all the properly mixed tracks. Thank you to Taylor, the photographer for the cover photo taken in Fall 2001. Thank you and love to URBNET and to you! — M.O. 2020.
