Coolzey – and the God Damned Friend Killers [album]
The third official full-length album offering from Coolzey following 2010’s debut ‘The Honey’ and 2013’s sophomore effort ‘Hit Factory’ sees a return to the collaborative, party atmosphere of its predecessors by utilizing musical cohorts from Los Angeles and Iowa for instrumentation and general vibes but with a decided embracement of the 90s-birthed genre known as Alternative, this time leaning on Alt-Rock in particular, though still exploring the far reaches of the Hip Hop universe from experimental indie rap (‘The Start-Up Son’ featuring Fake Four Inc’s Ceschi Ramos) all the way to a dark club homage to Ke$ha’s Die Young ‘Forever 21’ featuring up and coming outspoken queer rap warrior Kamil Kardashian. However, the spirit of the album is most adequately voiced by the bouncy lead pop rock single and first track ‘Qualify the End’ which playfully references Kriss Kross and House of Pain in a melancholy yet up beat track that evidences the influence of Weezer, Archers of Loaf and the ever-present undertones of Velvet Underground.
