Off The Record: Large Professor on Slick Rick’s “I Sparkle” [video]

“I out-glitter the chandelier,” states Slick Rick on “I Sparkle,” a Large Pro production that appeared on the Wild Wild West motion picture soundtrack. The latest episode of MASS APPEAL’s “Off The Record” explores the creation of this rare musical jewel.

“All rappers have their process,” says L.P., recalling his sessions with The Ruler. “The great rappers—I’ve got to witness a few of the great joints.” When Rick was able to secure a work release situation, he began recording a new album in a remote studio two hours’ drive from Queens, New York. Large Pro answered the call. “Took that drive, two-hour drive. Dolo! …Played him some beats.”

The results speak for themselves. “Rick is royalty,” L.P. emphasizes. “So he gonna make sure he gets his idea out and it sounds like how he wants it to come out. A lot of experimentation. He laid it right thereI learned so much from the session cause I actually got to see him track his vocals. Just taking his time and seeing his process was mind-blowing.”
