Off The Record: Large Professor on Busta Rhymes’ ‘The Heist’ [video]

One day back in the ’90s, storied producer and artist Large Professor turned on his television and heard a familiar, but confusing sound. It was a beat he’d made for Busta Rhymes’s ‘Anarchy’ album, for a song to be called “The Heist” that would ultimately feature a who’s who of New York rap luminaries: Roc Marciano, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah.

But when he heard the eerie “Heist” instrumental coming through his tube, during an episode of ‘MTV Cribs,’ he wasn’t sure how to react. Until he realized what was happening.

“Busta is going to visit Wu-Tang at they mansion, and this is the actual process where he’s playing the beat for them. On ‘MTV Cribs.’ I’m like, ‘Aw man, this is Busta playing the beat for Ghost to get on.’”

In our latest episode of “Off The Record,” Large Pro recalls how he pulled off this posse cut—Interpolated with footage of that legendary moment,

“It has a place…” he says of the track. “It has a place.”
