The Bug – Bad ft. Flowdan [video]

The Bug has released a new video for ‘Bad’, fronted by longtime collaborator Flowdan. It sees the Ninja Tune-signed producer amplify themes of frequency warfare, bodyshock and social disruption. In the video, Flowdan totes a ten-tonne ghettoblaster through the East London streets where he grew up. With the video framed tight around its protagonist, London feels like a busy, claustrophobic place – matching the stark, stripped-back make-up of the track. Flowdan’s lyrics – paired with The Bug’s beat, made entirely on a Soviet drum machine – echo Cham’s classic ‘Ghetto Story’, delivered in a singjay-esque style.

“As a young delinquent I always cherished the idea of sonic warfare, or noise confrontation,” The Bug explains. Historically magnetized to speakers – be it walkmans, rave rigs, ipods or the ‘PRESSURE’ soundsystem he now runs in Berlin ‒ as second-nature, the ghettoblaster stands as a symbol of that symbiotic relationship. In his absence in the video, he says, “It serves as my voice,
spirit and chosen weapon.”

‘Bad’ is drawn from The Bug’s double A-side single released on Ninja Tune in November. The flipside was ‘Get Out The Way’ feat. Killa P and Irah, The Bug’s first track with the former since ‘Skeng’. The single continues The Bug’s recent output in big double-hitters – started last year with the face-off between D Double E and Riko Dan on ‘Box’ / ‘Iceman’.
