Elizio de Buzios “Tamanqueiro” [audio]
The wide spectrum of Brazilian music has captured the hearts of people from all over the world. Samba, Bossa Nova and Tropicalia are generally the styles known to most, but in the 70s/80s, the influence of James Brown in Brazil created a new generation of Brazilian Soul and Funk artists who took what American musicians were doing and added their Brazilian twist. Brazilian Boogie hit full stride in the early 1980s, led by a core group of composer/arrangers/musicians such as Robson Jorge, Lincoln Olivetti, Junior Mendes, Sergio Sá and many others. The music recorded was directly related to the parties and sound systems that started in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, often noted as “Movimento Black Rio†(Black Rio Movement), where suburban Black youth from Rio found community in similar political and social ideologies, and a common interest to dance to the funky sounds of American and Brazilian soul and funk.
The “As 10 Mais Boogie Vol.1†compilation features 10 7†records (‘compactos’ in Portuguese) from the heart of this Boogie era. The compilation was compiled by Somatoria Do Barulho’s (SDB Discos) own Yoka, a resident of Sao Paulo and one of Brazil’s top researchers/collectors for unearthing rare and obscure Brazilian Boogie.
Today, enjoy the track “Tamanqueiro†from Elizio de Buzios. Although the song has filled dance floors all over the world, Elizio de Buzios is an artist who is relatively unknown outside of this one recording. He is still alive and plays music in Buzios, a beachside city a couple of hours north of Rio de Janeiro.
