Sidewalk Chalk “Dig” [audio]

Chicago’s own Sidewalk Chalk prepares to release their fourth full-length album entitled “An Orchid is Born” via Ropedope Records. The album was produced by Grammy Awared-winner Robert “Sput” Searight and is broken down into three different but cohesive sections: The Hope, The Loss and The Birth. The album began in the woods of Southern Alabama where band members Charlie Coffeen, Rico Sisney, Maggie Vagle, David Ben-Porat, Sam Trump and Josh Rosen locked in to write what they describe as their most important work to-date.

The album was inspired by recent events, including the 2016 presidential elections, police violence towards Black youth, and more. The band’s shows their capacity for growth with the understanding that one cannot be reborn until one looses what they have, first treading in the well of despair, prior to gaining hope.

Today check out the first single from the upcoming album for the song “Dig.” The song tackles the subject of police violence against peaceful protestors. Rico Sisney, writer and lead singer of the band states:

‘When I started writing the lyrics, I just had an image of a kid in funeral clothes waking up in a coffin and digging his way out of the ground. In the entire song we never mention the race of any of the characters, but you automatically assume that the boy is black. We performed the song on tour and this woman was so upset that we were pushing the narrative that white cops kill black kids. That speaks to how prevalent and culturally embedded these stories are at this point.’
