Tomorrow, Oct 28th, Manifesto Records will release the 2-CD compilation for the Lafayette Afro Rock Band vs Ice compilation entitled “AfroFunkExplosion!” The reissue compilation is the first ever US compilation which highlights the Lafayette Afro Rock Band’s most well known tracks, often times sampled by some of Hip Hop’s greats, while shedding light on their lesser known tracks via their various name changes – Ice, Crispy & Co and Captain Dax. The 2-CD compilation comes with rare photos of the band alongside full linear notes detailing their history.

The Lafayette Afro Rock band formed in Long Island, NY and moved to France in 1970 to work with legendary French producer, Pierre Jaubert. Largely unknown during their time, their work was later discovered via producers and DJs having been sampled by Jay Z, Public Enemy, Wreckx-N-Effect, The Gorillaz, Flying Lotus and others. The powerful saxaphone you hear for Jay Z’s “Show Me What You Got” is sampled from Lafayette Afro Rock Band’s song “The Darkest Light” taken from their second album entitled “Malik.” Original pressing vinyl for their catalogue are highly in demand from record collectors, DJs and producers worldwide and command prices in the hundreds of dollars.
