BROOKZILL! (Prince Paul, Ladybug Mecca, Rodrigo Brandao & Don Newkirk) – Saudade Songbook ft. Count Bass D [audio]
BROOKZILL! (Brooklyn meets Brazil) is the new collective of Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, Gravediggaz), Ladybug Mecca (Digable Planets), Brazilian MC Rodrigo Brandão, and legendary producer Don Newkirk.
Combining influences of NYC Hip Hop and Brazilian music, BROOKZILL! pays homage to the two musical cultures that inspire the project on the group’s debut album Throwback To The Future out October 7th on Tommy Boy Ent.
Since Hip-Hop’s inception, it has been the product of a gestalt of influences, carried in its founding artists, many inspired by Afro-Brazilian rhythms, rich instrumentation, and dance interplay. For Brazil in particular, the culture thrives in the nightlife, arts, and street expression. With all eyes turned to Rio for the launch of the Olympics this week, BROOKZILL’s music serves to remind that our two cultures have long been intertwined; connected by rhythm and eruptive displays of musical expression.
Today the group drops lead single “Saudade Songbook (feat. Count Bass D)†via Brooklyn Vegan and shares the album release date and tracklist (below). An “untranslatable, undeniably potent word†(NPR), “Saudade†is a Portuguese expression of melancholy or longing.
