About Run the Blues (EP due May 2016)
Oakland/Brooklyn-based electro-soul singer Corina Corina has spent the past three years touring nonstop. The self-proclaimed “rapper trapped in a singer’s body” signed with boutique booking agency Deep Thinka Records in the fall of 2014 as the only female vocalist on their roster of independent hip hop heavyweights, that includes blueprint and Brooklyn hip hop duo, Tanya Morgan. During her monthlong SXSW tour as Morgan’s opening act (with Fake Four’s DJ Halo), Corina realized that not having had released a new project in over a year, she was in desperate need of new material to perform. Rather than waiting to begin her third album in order to breathe fresh life into her live set, she decided to create a tribute project to two of her favorite artists, Killer Mike and El-P, also known as Run the Jewels.
“Having spend over half the year touring, I started to think about what has inspired me (and kept me sane) during these long stretches on the road, and it was listening to these guys – I’ve been totally obsessed with both of them for years.” The timing was perfect because her younger sibling, Mari C., recently received her degree in audio engineering and wanted to collaborate; hence, Run the Blues was born. RTB is a tribute EP featuring all original lyrics and melodies written by Corina Corina exclusively over Run the Jewels beats from 2013’s Run the Jewels (Fool’s Gold Records) and 2014’s Run The Jewels 2, (Mass Appeal Records). The personal stories she tells are inspired by Corina’s journeys on the road- from the disappointment that comes from lackluster show attendance to the connections she develops with her fellow musicians, rap crushes and more!
