J.Lately – Let’s Just Be Friends (prod. Drew Banga & 1-OAK) [video]
Ineffable Music rapper J.Lately shares his latest music video via Thizzler for the title track off his YouHeardThatNew-debuted Let’s Just Be Friends album. The video is co-directed by Andrew Elsayid and J.Lately himself, with the Oakland-bred emcee spitting a smooth flow underneath a tender, faint snowfall. “Let’s Just Be Friends,†produced by Drew Banga and 1-OAK, echoes a catchy piano lick that sits over a steady beat. J.Lately exhibits multiple styles, as is evident on the single, “I Miss You,†where the rapper give a more laid back flow and soulful style over horn jabs, creating a nostalgic hip-hop track with a jazzy twist.
“I went into this album trying to write songs that were less about being a rapper or a dreamer and more about just being a human,†J.Lately explains. “I noticed that a lot of times we get ourselves into these negative co-dependent relationships where we allow ourselves to hurt each other, whereas if we could just learn to love ourselves a little more and treat each other better we could all just be friends.†Having split time between Oakland and Southern California, J.Lately’s influences are eclectic and mesh together effortlessly to form his own individual style. A relentless drive has kept Lately on tour across the country with artists such as Zion I, Locksmith, Los Rakas, Chuuwee, and Rey Res to name a few. He has released multiple solo and collaborative projects, with his most recent solo release being 2014’s Make.Believe.
Having recently concluded his 13-date headlining Bourne Madd Tour, J.Lately is stepping into the forefront with Let’s Just Be Friends. On Nov. 8th, J.Lately will be having the Let’s Just Be Friends release party at Stork Club in Oakland, and in December he kicks off an 18-date Winter Fresh Out West Tour with I.L.A.M.
