The 20/20 Project – Tapes and Crates [EP]

The term “20/20” reflects a visual activity that is commonly referred to as ‘clarity of vision’ or the way in which the retina processes resolution. For Toronto-based group the 20/20 Project, their combined experience and years in the Canadian hip hop community has not only delivers a sense of clarity, but also the ability to come together and deliver a vision that aligns with the classic sounds of the boom bap era.

After spending years working on their own digital singles and mixtapes, emcees D-Squared and Idrees found themselves trading bars over DJ Unknown’s production, who was with Canadian group Tru-Paz at the time. It was that moment when the trio realized their musically chemistry was more than a one-time event, but rather a journey to be shared. Despite the challenges present in many hip hop groups, The 20/20 Project works as a well-oiled machine – D-Squared and Idrees trade up-tempo deliveries and quick bars, while DJ Unknown provides the in-house production of traditionally rooted hip hop soundscapes.

With over two decades of experience and accolades between the group members, The 20/20 Project offers a sense of veteran status, delivering socially conscious lyrics over bass heavy boom-bap beats. In 2010, The 20/20 Project released their debut EP Employees of the Year, which made considerable headway in the Canadian hip hop scene. Five years later, and the trio release their new project Tapes and Crates, which expands their talent both individually
