ThisisDA – Hotsteppa [video]
20-year old British rapper and producer ThisisDA has been having a stellar 2015, with the critical acclaim and success of previous offerings ‘Won’t Change’ featuring West Coast rap veteran Blu, ‘Sell Me’ and ‘Bounce Back’. On the back of strong support from the likes of Complex, The 405, Hypetrak, DJ Booth and Earmilk among others, the Bristol native is proud to announce the release of his new EP Based Off Black on September 3.
Before he debuts the Based Off Black EP in a couple of weeks though, ThisisDA has unveiled his first music video of the year, for ‘Hotsteppa’, the third track to be released from his forthcoming EP. Shot and directed by Tim Crawley (Run The Jewels, Paul White, Danny Brown), with a cameo appearance from Bristol visual artist Just Scribble, the visuals perfectly captures the energy of ThisisDA’s growing stature, as he continues to carve out a niche for himself, within UK Hip Hop.
Produced by long time collaborator Mankub, with Audiosnax providing complementary live DJ scratches, new offering ‘Hotsteppa’ runs with an infectious and nostalgic boom bap musical milieu, a hint of which we previously heard on ‘Won’t Change’. As one of the first records to be completed for the ‘Based Off Black’ EP, ‘Hotsteppa’ leads the way with a notably gritty, braggadocios and aggressive tone and message, with ThisisDA bringing his lyrical dexterity to the forefront.
With tastemakers referring to ThisisDA as “British Hip Hop goldâ€, and comparing the gifted 20-year old to the likes of Joey Bada$$, Lupe Fiasco and Dizzee Rascal, plus further support coming from BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, XFM and Noisey, it’s clear to see why his Based Off Black is one of the most anticipated UK Hip Hop projects. Watch below as ThisisDA drives this point home with ‘Hotsteppa’.
