Relic – The 13th Floor (prod. by Fresh Kils) [album]
RELIC teams up with producer FRESH KILS for a brand new album
2-time IMA award winning hip-hop artist RELIC delivers a fresh new album, this time with Juno nominated producer FRESH KILS on the beats. In search of the missing level of hip hop, Rel has aptly titled his new record “The 13th Floorâ€.
Known for his production and collaborations with Canadian rap icons Shad, Thrust, Ghettosocks, Moka Only and more, Toronto native Relic again hits his audience with a unique brand of writing, penning an album with various themes. From his confession of being the school bully on “The Least of These†to the question of how to keep his faith while battling his addictions on “Losing Loveâ€, this is definitely not your average hip hop record. It should also be noted that there are NO featured artists on any of the 13 tracks. A bold move for up-and-comer Relic, who strangely defies hip hop norms despite the warm familiarity of his NYC influenced rhyme stylings.
“We really felt like we could push our artistic boundaries here… I know it’s ambitious to try and bridge the gap between true school puritanism and modern hip hop, but we love them both. Our way was to explore some new places with the music while staying true to ourselves.†says Rel. “This is just the tip of the ice-burg, a new beginning for both of us really…†Adds Fresh Kils
Thoughtful verses on “Fire in The Sky†touch on what it must be like for our Canadian troops deployed across the globe, while playful rhyme schemes on “Isn’t it Something†reflect Rel’s gift for writing bars that lyric lovers will appreciate and tip their hat to. And oh, who’s that singing all of the choruses and doing the cuts on the album? The modest triple threat points at himself with a confident demeanour.
This new album is a cohesive piece of art where nothing sounds calculated or forced; there’s a natural attention to rhythm which becomes the perfect vehicle for the mysterious adventure that is The 13th Floor. Relic takes the listener into his world, inviting us to join him in the search for the future of hip hop.
“What I like most about Relic’s style is that his approach to production and rapping is always true to the essence of hip hop but still inventive in subtle and surprising ways, and above that, his content is sincere and relatable.”- SHAD
