Champagne Soul is a term we here in the HNRL braintrust originally created to identify a specific style of mid to late 80’s sophisticated soul music, most closely identified with groups like The S.O.S. Band and Loose Ends. And although that was the foundation for the original designation, we’ve come to realize that the sound didn’t end with the era. Instead much of its ideals have influenced me, allowing me to fuse its elements within a different context to push the sound forward.

When I started working on this album, it began with a few collaborations which set the foundation of the projects direction. Songs like “Halfway” feat Phonte and Carlitta Durand, 1-O.A.K.’s “Rewind” and “Main Thang” nod to Champagne Soul’s relevance in today’s context. With others like Teedra Moses’ “Invitation” and 1-O.A.K.’s “Ready”, I wanted to strike a chord at the quintessence of what the sound is. I’m HELLA juiced about the outcome.

Working with Teedra, Phonte and Carlitta and Joyo was only right. These artists make music consistent with the same ideals and creativity that influenced us to do this. Fresh, Fun, Sophisticated music for real life.

Also, with 1-O.A.K. holding down a bulk of the project, folks will continues to see why he is one of the most talented to do this today. Our collaboration runs deep in and outside this project. With the help of Tap.10 and Whiz, we’ve been able to bring to you the first of many HNRL presents projects… This is only the beginning.

I humbly invite y’all to partake in the “Champagne Campaign” and listen to the music, share it with your folks, live with it, and love to it. After all that’s what it’s about.
