Co$$ ...is CashUs King [mxtp by DJ Nex Millen]
When there’s an emcee who receives near-unanimous critical praise from music journalists, personal cosigns from enigmatic, indie hip-hop icon Blu (speaking from experience), and is dubbed ‘The Most Underrated MC in LA’ by The Los Angeles Times, we should probably pay attention… Co$$ should be no stranger to loyal followers of Exile’s Dirty Science camp, or NYC’s Brown Bag Allstars. If you’ve ever listened to the Godlee Barnes LP, or a J57 posse cut, and asked, “who was the dude that KILLED that last verse?,” I’d bet that you were asking about Co$$…
He’s acclaimed for his dynamic, vast scope as an emcee, [currently somewhat of an endangered species] in re: to both his lyrical stylings and his beat selection. 2011’s “Before I Awoke” album earned Co$$’s music the title of ‘Future G-Funk’ by many of its champions, yet some of his EPs (see: Grayer Skies) have a vibe that would be quick to grab fans of ’90’s Premo/ Pete Rock east coast boom-bap… Co$$’s vocal delivery can break into deep, chorus-like poetic meters reminiscent of a younger Slug (Atmosphere); his lyrics are just as likely to boast slick, free-flowing punchlines and syllabic cadences in more traditional accord with West Coast pioneers, such as The Dogg Pound, who preceded him…
Soon switching to his common alias, CashUs King [now that use of “$’s” in rapper-names is the new Von Dutch trucker hat], this mix by DJ Nex Millen is a sort of late pass in preparation for CashUs King’s “Church [of the Good Thief..]” album, coming VERY SOON on Public Axis Rex.
