Nolan The Ninja – The Ill Shit [mixtape] (ft. Noveliss of Clear Soul Forces, MarvWon, DJ Soko of The Left & more)

The Ill Sh-t (front - FINAL)

With his new record “The Ill Shit,” Nolan The Ninja pays homage to golden age hip-hop and shows the Detroiter’s faith in preserving the culture he fell in love with.

Nolan caught early ears with his debut “NinjaTown,” which led to further acclaim for his production and collaborations with other Detroit artists. After appearing on the likes of The Fader, Pigeons and Planes, XXL, and Pitchfork for his work with Chavis Chandler and Zeloopers, he is prepared to further showcase his solo voice. “I really think that ‘Ninjatown’ was a good first record, but I don’t feel like it represented me in the right way,” he says. “These new records are
exactly who I see myself as now, as an artist.”

His sophomore release, “The Ill Shit,” sews the pages from classic hip hop manifestos into Nolan’s own set of 14 songs. He and producer 5ynoT’s minimalist sound beds preserve the boom bap era and give Nolan’s hoarse, sharp-tongued raps about industry monotony and artistic struggles room to roam.

“I just wanted to take hip-hop back to a time where emcees were known for just being ill and only coming hard with that Ill shit,” he says.

Fellow Detroit emcees such as Clear Soul Forces member Noveliss (“Antidote”), crewmate Chavis Chandler (“The Books”), and Fat Killahs members MarvWon and Fatt Father (“Mahogany,” “Clout”) all lend their voices to further round out the album.
