Fresh Daily – Around The Way ft. Augi & Anisa Fujah [mp3]

Here’s a new summer cut from Fresh Daily “Around The Way” featuring Augi & Anisa Fujah.

I wrote this song in 2003. I was 23 years old. I’d been living on my own for 4 years and loving Brooklyn. I would go to The 5 spot on Myrtle Ave for open mic night. There were these 2 beautiful women who would sing there, Anisa & Augi. When I say sing, they RIPPED IT DOWN. When I linked w/ Substantial’s crew and began recording what would eventually become my debut album, I asked both Anisa and Augi to help me talk about my borough on this track prod. by Algorythm.
Ultimately, this song didn’t make the album and my name changed from ILL TARZAN to Fresh Daily. I moved from Ft. Greene to Bed-Stuy. Substantial moved back to Maryland. Algorythm took a hiatus from production for design. Things change, people drift apart. I’d see/speak to Augi, Anisa, Algorythm and Substantial significantly less…..

In January 2011, we lost Anisa to cancer. I never even knew she was sick. I found out while in a studio session with her high school friend, Om’mas Keith who told me she passed. Shocked and stunned, I couldn’t believe someone so full of life and talent was gone.

Anyone who knows me knows that while music is my life, it’s my escape oftentime so I’m not really personal in my music like that. (Probably another reason why this song has stayed hidden in my iTunes for so long)

Recently, while lamenting and reminiscing simultaneously on FB on how NYC and Brooklyn have changed exponentially and waxing nostalgic about how things were, a friend suggested I put more of these”last-of-the-mohican” type rants in my music. I immediately thought of this song. Anisa’s Birthday just passed on July 14th. As her voice popped up on this track (I havent listened to this song in probably 2 years) I immediately decided to post this song online.

Enjoy.
Rest in power, Anisa.
Brooklyn Forever.
