Yirim Seck Bio

Yirim Seck is a wordsmith MC whose music both reflects the golden era of hip-hop and holds a roadmap to the future. Yirim is not only held firm by his roots — bridging the illustrious musical legacy of Seattle’s Central District and his family’s rich Senegalese heritage — but propels his insight and drive into a sound and a message all-too-relevant for today. Known for his searing lyricism and impassioned performance, Yirim Seck has become one of Seattle’s most well-respected and sought-after MCs. Building on his critically acclaimed debut HEAR ME OUT in 2009, Yirim has performed at venues as diverse as community festivals, upscale nightclubs, college campuses and company parties, connecting with audiences across borders and delivering global discourse through music. His music critiques and calls out shots from the perspective of a dedicated father and community activist, and empowers listeners through his gift of storytelling and honest reflection. Yirim’s journey as a musician was a true crossover. At twelve years old, Yirim bore witness to Lauryn Hill destroying MC after MC in a cypher at Garfield High School in the Central District, and was inspired to surround himself with true-school hip-hop, from Guru to Ras Kass to Digable Planents to Scarface. At fourteen, his mother, in a Fresh Prince-esque move, decided to get Yirim out of trouble in the neighborhood by sending him away. But instead of packing his bags and moving to Bel Aire, Yirim found himself in Dakar, Senegal, where he was immersed in his father’s culture and musical expression. Over two years, Yirim forged hip-hop with the sounds of Mbalax, itself a fusion of contemporary pop and traditional Senegalese dance music. Those formative years forever sculpted Yirim’s artistic approach as a dynamic navigation of story across a soundscape spanning across continents and generations. Yirim is now known and respected amongst Senegal’s most recognized hip-hop artists including Daara J and DJ Kia Mbegue. Always growing as an artist, Yirim is working both on new musical endeavors and on a quest to take his talents back to West Africa, where his musical career began. It’s only a matter of time before his voice is experienced on all stops in between.
