In its 25 years of existence, the JazzReggae Festival at UCLA has made a striking name for itself, becoming the largest student-run festival in the United States. In 2011, it sold out both days, bringing together and attracting a diverse crowd inspired by its shared love of music to revel under the California sun. Traditionally held over Memorial Day Weekend, the festival has become one of Los Angeles’ celebrated events – starting off the summer showcasing musical performances from around the world. With the 25th year bringing in artists like, Little Dragon, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, Steel Pulse, The Wailing Souls and Gyptian, Los Angeles entered a dimension of riffs, melodies, and bold beats that highlighted the multifaceted performers and their talents. Reggae and Jam day both cultivated an array of attendees ready to experience not just the music, but live art, food, crafts, and sustainability. The multiplicity of the festival itself mirrors the diversity of LA, drawing in festive company from its many communities. Through sustainability and more affordable admission, the festival strives to make an impact on the broader Southern California region. As a contribution from the students of UCLA to Los Angeles, the JazzReggae Festival offers an experience immersed in art, culture, and music. While the festival prepares for its 26th year, it reflects upon the great performances of 2011.
