Since 2004, thousands of people have witnessed–and participated in–Hip Hop Karaoke, the New York-based event that flips the age-old concept of karaoke with over 300 classic and current hip-hop songs. Organizers of the monthly event, which has become New York’s most popular monthly hip-hop event, supply the lyrics, stage, original beat, DJ, and hypeman and all that’s left is getting on the mic. In the past, the event has been visited by everyone from Pete Rock and Jeru the Damaja to Rhymefest and Masta Ace.
In 2008, HHK staged its 1st Annual Hip Hop Karaoke Championship, selling out the 800-capacity Highline Ballroom in New York. On January 29, 2010, the organizers, with help from VTech, staged its biggest event to date: the 2010 Hip Hop Karaoke Championship at New York’s Irving Plaza. The crowd of 1,200+ witnessed 12 of Hip Hop Karaoke’s finest perform tracks by Jay-Z, Run-D.M.C., and Notorious B.I.G. with special guest judges Peter Rosenberg from Hot 97, Black Moon’s Buckshot and the legendary emcee Big Daddy Kane. In the end, Jessica, a 28-year old newcomer from Queens took home the title, a $1,000 cash prize, and a VTech WIFI Internet Radio while the crowd celebrated and reveled in a night of classic hip-hop.
