Macklemore – The Town (Sabzi Remix)
Shortly after I met Macklemore at Evergreen State College sometime in 2003, he sent me about 67 messages on MySpace (a new thing back then) asking for beats for the debut album he was working on. Like the buster I was in 2003, I pretty much ignored most of his messages. Ok, all of his messages.
The 20 or so of you that were paying attention to the music us SEA rap doods were making back then might have picked up on this lack of communication between Ben and I when he shouted out how difficult it was to get a hold of me in the lyrics to his infamous “MySpace Song.” Yea, I know in the song he said “Blue Scholars” but I know he was talking about me.
Maybe it was because I didn’t want to work with the guy. Maybe it was because I was afraid that the MC I was already working with would get jealous and take a baseball bat to my car while I was in the barbershop getting my hair cut. Maybe it was because I didn’t want him, or anybody for that matter, to discover that I had only made 14 beats and I’d put them all out already and there was nothing left for me to give. Or maybe, just maybe, it was my Seattle-bred, passive-aggressive way of telling Macklemore “Not now, but one day…”
Well Macklemore, that day has come. You are becoming far too popular for me to ignore and it’s better that I try and associate myself with your inevitable success as an artist before the opportunity escapes me. I have remixed “The Town” and used my Rollei to take a picture of one our favorite burger spots to function as the artwork for its internet release.
Certainly, I chose this photo because that place is a Town staple and we love those burgers. More importantly, however, it’s the name of the restaurant (without the “s”) that reminds me of my behavior towards you in 2003.
I vow to make a living amends to you from here on, Macklemore. Enshallah I will have the opportunity to cook many more beats for you to rock over. Love ya buddy. – Sabzi
