Philadelphia Slick – R and B Stole The Show
Every once in a while a new breed of hip-hop emerges resulting in a genre-defying creation of epic proportions. Philadelphia Slick has done this not once, but twice. With Oil and Culture Industry, Philadelphia Slick has managed to create two complimentary albums that have proven to capture positive attention everywhere from old-school hip-hop critics to the indie hipsters across the board and even over to the jazz and classical scenes.
As Paper Garden Records’ first hip-hop act, Philadelphia Slick brings an exciting new venture for the label that is sure to excite new audiences across the globe.
Bio:
Philadelphia Slick, often described as a mix of Aesop Rock and The Roots’ early work, returns on Oil with concentrated rhythm, mesmerizing lyricism, and lush vocal and horn melodies. Lead emcee Noesis continues to uproot the predictability of today’s hip hop lyrics with rhymes and stories about food, stock markets, guns, and earth evacuations. Able to combine vast erudition with catchy hooks, Noesis spotlights social problems without preachiness. New drummer El Smooth handles most of the production, raps several versus and sings background vocals as well.
Whereas Culture Industry, the band’s first LP, was a bombastic celebration of horns and seventies funk, Oil is a more expansive effort. Horns still appear on much of the album, but on tracks like “Turn It Up†and “Can’t You Hearâ€, singer Jenn Z. is often utilized as the main instrument. A bitterly ironic harp is featured on the sparse “Hunt V. Killâ€, while the lead single, “Gonna Get Overâ€, features more complex orchestration.
